Update on Evelyn and Austin

Hey There! Welcome back for the next installment in the Life and Times of J/K Patton! :)

First, Evelyn (because I love her). Our suspicions for random fussiness seems to be confirmed...First Tooth is breaking through! When we touch the lower gum and rub, we feel a bit of tooth poking out. Yeah!

Next, Austin. As you know, I have been looking for new employment in Texas. In Houston, there is a psychologist who would like to hire me, but I must first attain my LPA (and a few other details) before working for her is possible. There have been nothing but delays! I studied for the exams, but I did not make the minimum score necessary on one and must now take it again. After so many months of delays, I began to think perhaps I am not supposed to work for her. So I started searching for other employment opportunities.

One day, it occurred to me that I did not need to focus on Houston, since Julius was working for Hobby Lobby and could transfer if needed. So I started to search in San Antonio and Austin. As soon as I looked in Austin, I received a message from my previous employer, Kelley, asking what I was doing now and that she may be wanting a psychometrist soon. I was very excited! We talked before and just after Thanksgiving about details. We finally came to an agreement that, I believe, works for both of us right now. :)

For all you Hill Country family, I am sorry to inform that we will not, at this time, be moving to the area. I am going to commute for 2 days a week to work, but our home-base will remain in Houston until God illuminates the path He has set for us. My parents have graciously opened their home to me and Evelyn those two days and nights, and will be baby-sitting her while I work. This opportunity has made me very happy to be able to work again, bringing in some much needed income, and to help wean me from being all-day caregiver to Evelyn, as I know the time will come that she will be in daycare while I work more often. I will miss being a stay-at-home mom, but circumstances do not support this career. So back to the one I am trained for I will go.

Thank you for your prayers! This is a wonderful solution for our current situation. I will still be working to attain my LPA, as I believe this will assist us in finding the stability we so crave. But as I have always said in employment interviews, I do not make plans for too far into the future because God always has a way of changing those plans! We look forward to seeing what He has in store for us, and in the meantime, we will continue to accept the blessings He bestows and praise Him for them. We will continue to seek and we will find.

Our God Reigns!

"And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God." (Deut. 28:2)

Over the past year, we have been opening ourselves up to God to be changed and molded by Him. While trying to be obedient to His will, He has humbled us by slowly removing material distractions from our lives: our jobs, our own home, our possessions; and He has been slowly replacing them with blessings beyond compare. Our daughter, Evelyn, who is the most contented and happy baby we have ever known (who is also very beautiful, smart, and healthy). Affiliation with a church that shines His light on our flaws while reiterating how much God loves us, and that Jesus' sacrifice heals us all so that we are able to seek a personal relationship with the Father. And constantly reminding us that He has placed our family and friends in our lives to fulfill His purpose and provide a holy community for us to grow in. Thank you, Lord!

God has been providing for us every step of the way. Some bills have been left by the wayside, some bills have been lovingly taken by family for a time, and the rest of our monetary needs have been met (usually just by the skin of our teeth). This has been so evident to us, the more we have allowed ourselves to see His provision. Today has been a HUGE example and the purpose of our Praise Report on the blog.

Julius finally located a leak in the radiator (which was replaced while we were living in Tulsa), as he has been observing the fast loss of antifreeze. With a looming trip to Tulsa for Thanksgiving, we knew we had to get it looked at. Julius had been able to work quite a bit of overtime for the paycheck we had just received, but the amount in the check seemed higher than what we were expecting. We still have to look at the pay-stub to understand this, but we were thankful that we would be able to cover the next pay period (during which time we will be out of town) and then-some. Now we knew this was in preparation for the vehicle repairs.

Then came the bad news. This morning, I dropped the truck off at a place called Christian Brothers Automotive just up the road. When they called back, it was with news that there were two leaks and the entire radiator needed to be replaced...again. The price tag? $700 Well, we knew our $200 was not enough so I asked them to come pick me up so that I could bring the truck home. Julius was at work, so after I talked with him, he said that he simply gave up and told God, "It's in your hands."

I received a call from Pam, the lady who drove me home and whom I think is one of the owners or a wife of an owner. While we had been driving home, she was asking questions about us and I told her pretty much what I wrote at the beginning of this blog. It was a wonderful few minutes being able to share the ways He has been working in us. Pam essentially asked whether we would be able to come up with $300 over the next couple of weeks, and if so, they would like to take care of the rest. She said she was touched by our story, and they wanted to be a part of what God is doing in our lives. I was in tears and could not immediately respond. God is so good! We agreed on the details and hung up. When I was calm, I called Julius back. He said he was just about to dial his parents when I called. He, too, was speechless.

How GREAT is our God! He has proven His faithfulness over and over to us, and I am so thankful that we have been willing to witness it. Thank you for your prayers! We look forward to seeing how He intends to use us in the future, and pray that this job opportunity in Austin pans out for us.

We love you all! God Bless!

Another video

So Evelyn has been a bit noisy today. Earlier this morning (too early), she woke up, stuck her tongue out and loudly proclaimed, "Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" over and over and over... and over again! It was so very funny. After coming home from church and putting her in her jumper, she spent almost an hour just jabbering loudly. I tried to video some of it, but it just doesnt do justice to her vocalizations. She is such a happy child and we are so blessed! Enjoy! Julius

It's Feeding Time!

I wanted to add a couple pics and a video of me feeding Evelyn some sweet potatoes. We have started adding some Gerber 'First Foods' baby food to her diet maybe once a day, followed up of course with good 'ole fashioned breast milk.

And I guess our 'feeding' might not be enough because she seems hungry enough to go after her toes, too! =)

Oh, to be so flexible! Anyway, here is the video. (You'll need to turn up your volume.)

Thanks!
Julius

Good News, and Not So Good News

Hello Fans (or I should say Fan = Janet Patton) :)

There have been a couple of events worth sharing in the past few days, so I am hopping on to tell of them.

First, Praise the Lord for Hobby Lobby and it's new store manager! After reviewing their financials, they saw that they are able to take on ONE more full-time person in the store; and since Julius busts his chops every day for them, they have offered the position to him. YEAH! This, of course, means a higher wage, benefits, and a guaranteed minimum number of hours every week. This definitely helps financially, since we often come uncomfortably close to zero in the checking account after paying the bills that will not disappear. :)

And second, I have heard about my score for the EPPP test required for my LPA. The score does not pass, and I will need to re-take the exam. I do not know how soon I can do this because I must find a way to study better. There are few study aids out there, and they are often very expensive. All I can believe is that this new delay serves God's will for us, somehow. Please pray for us in this matter. I truly hope that my potential employer will continue to wait as patiently as she has been, or that she receives her approval soon so that I can work without the LPA.

That is about it for now. We love you all, and thank you for your prayers and support!

... And still rollin'!

Howdy!

Just wanted to post a couple quick updates:

Kimberly took her LPA licensing exam and did not feel too positive about it. However, it's all in God's hands now and we will follow where he leads us.

Evelyn rolled the other way! We were at a bible study Sunday evening (we like this group!) and near the end we divided up into separate groups to discuss and pray over some things. Well, it seems that - while Kimberly's group was praying - Evelyn decided to roll over from her back to her belly all by herself! Of course, Kimberly was keeping an eye on her during the prayer and was having difficulties refraining from bursting out in cheers when Evelyn rolled. Fun times!

I'm still working at Hobby Lobby working as many hours as they will give me and more. The Handy Patton business is still puttering, but since we are going into Fall, I will soon lose the meager yardwork that I currently have. I'm not sure where it will be going from here, but we are holding on to God's promise of Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

We hope everyone is doing well and we certainly miss our Oklahoma family. Can't wait to see yall in November!

Love to everyone!
Julius

P.S. - Had to take a picture of Evelyn there. She had a little hair 'thing' that she kept pulling down over her eyes. She never cried or complained, probably because she could still see through some of the holes. But when I saw it, I laughed so much. Love my baby!

Rollin, Rollin, Rollin

Well, today Evelyn has finally put together all the steps necessary to roll over from her belly to back. Yes, I know that I have said before that she has rolled over before, but that was when she was accidentally placed with her arms facing the same direction, so she only had to figure out how to kick her legs over. But now, now she can do it all alone! I have started putting her down on her belly just so I can watch her do it. :)

She is also working on rolling from back to belly. She is constantly sleeping on her side and rolling back and forth. Too cute. I have been so blessed to have spent the past 5 months with her.

Thank you Lord.

HA! She did it!

While in the play pen, lying under the floor gym, Evelyn kicks and talks. Mommy strolls over and helps her roll over to her tummy for a little Tummy Time. However, Evelyn wants to lean to the right and look up at a toy. With both arms facing the left, she is twisted with her head to one side and her hips laying flat on the floor. Soon enough she starts to lift the leg that would send her rolling. After a few tries, she does it and "boom" she is flat on her back, all by herself! Mommy starts "whoo-hoo"-ing and "yeah baby" yells, clapping and smiling! Daddy missed it...he was in the other room. The first thing he asks when we go to tell him "Are you sure you did not help her a little?" Yes, I am sure!

Go, Evie!!

4 Months Old

Hello All! I am so glad you stopped by. Today I want to share Evelyn's 4 month update.

Yesterday, we went to the doctor's office for her physical and shots. The doctor gave her a clean bill of health! 13 lbs, 10 oz. and 26 in. long now. When the nurse gave her the shots, she did not appear to register the first one, but the second one made that scream come out. She took it all like a trooper.

My, how fast it goes! I find myself counting down till bedtime, but having to remind myself that means another day older. She has been using her lungs to share sounds and has been making "ma ma" sounds a lot. :) I have been able to get out a few more giggles, too. She is grasping with intention and still trying to roll over. While we are still working on being on the tummy for longer than a few minutes, she is progressing at a good rate.

I will post some more pics later, but now I need to get her out of the play-yard for she is getting frustrated with the scenery!

Love to you all!

Nearly Rolling

Evelyn has been doing a lot of moving lately. When I go to get her from the crib, she has turned herself almost 90 degrees. She is laying on her back and turning her head to see what is above her head. AND she is very nearly turning over. She has gotten herself totally on her side, with arms and legs facing forward, but then falls onto her back where she started. :) I am so excited to see the first roll...I just hope that it is not from the couch!

Baby's First Giggle

I have been listening hard to her gasps of delight and watching those big, gummy grins come and go. Today she has finally had her first laugh. Mommy was holding her out and making raspberry sounds to an unknown tune, and this made her go from smile, to grin, to GIGGLE!

God Blesses us everyday to watch her development! I have finally started to compile the video from the camera since our time in the hospital, and it is amazing to see how she has grown into the wrinkles she was born with! Here are a couple of videos from then to now...

A few new pics

I just wanted to take a moment and upload a few new pictures of the baby. She is growing so fast, I think she has probably reached 12 lbs now. She is cooing and jabbering a lot and is very active! We are beginning to see her try to move her hands with intention, as she has been able to grab her foot or a toy she was looking at. Such joy to watch. I never realized there was such subtle ways to play with an infant, but I guess when you have 12 hours a day to fill with one, you learn to look for the little things, eh?

Fare Thee Well, Kassie

It was with sad hearts that Julius and I said good-bye to Kassie, Julius' cat who has been with him for nearly 7 years. While this decision was a very difficult one to make, we hope that it will benefit her and that God will provide a good home for her.

Since moving to Houston, Kassie has been displaying some difficult behavior changes. This is in part due to having a spirited 4-year-old in the same house, whereas before it has always been an adult home. Then, with our latest addition, attention for her, which has always been second to Kramer (the cat-love of Julius' life), became nearly unheard of.

Kassie is such a loving cat. She always wants to be rubbed and petted. Her purring is always quick to start and epic in volume...I would be able to hear her on the other end of the phone! Watching her play and sit up on her hind legs like a gofer were always enjoyable for me to watch.

We pray that the Houston Humane Society is able to locate a home without young children and who will provide the lavish attention she so craves. WE MISS YOU!

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures!

My mother reminded me that I have not sent out any recent photos of our quickly growing infant. Here are some that I took on my phone (so not the greatest quality)! She is coming up on 3 months of age...WOW!

I will try to add more in the future!

BTW - For those of you who have not yet heard, Julius was hired on at Hobby Lobby last week. YEAH!!! While it is technically part-time, they needed the help so he is working the maximum possible hours there. This has relieved many concerns for the time being. I am still waiting to hear from the Texas licensing board about my application (grrr), but I am trying to use the time to study for the exam so that I may take it soon after receiving approval.

Thank you all for your prayers, and please keep them coming! Love to you all!

First Word?

So, we just finished giving Evelyn a bath. This is a great family activity! Julius and I take turns between washing her and holding her head at the back of the baby bath. She is so good about being in the water, and I take special care to make sure that water flows over her eyes in the hopes to maintain her lack of fear in that area. Plus, Julius loves this time extra-specially due to it having been the only time she was allowed out of her harness. Seeing her kick her legs all over made his day each time!

After the bath, I wrapped her in her towel and took her to the couch for the follow-up lotion and clean bed-time clothing. This part has sometimes caused a hitch in the whole deal as she could start screaming for no obvious reason and not stop till long after it was all done. But not this time. She smiled at Mommy and wriggled around happily. Then came time to put on her night clothes. "NNNNoooo!" It sure sounded as though she was protesting, as we both heard this.

Daddy is sad. He has been trying to get her to say "I love you Daddy" or "Go Daddy Go!" Alas, I do not think it is in the cards this time. :) Do you all think it counts as a first word???

Evelyn's Doctors Appointments

Evelyn had her two month check up this past Wednesday and all is very well! She is now 23" long and 10 lbs, 15 oz. It is exciting to seehow she has grown in just two months! They also administered her second round of shots. She may have screamed her anger at the nurse, but at least Daddy did not pass out! ;)

The next day, we had an appointment with the orthopedist. She was given an X-ray to determine if her pelvis and leg limbs have grown into the correct places. Boy, she was NOT happy about it. It took awhile to calm her down, but at least the doctor did not mess with her again. He took us through the X-rays and said that her points are where they should be, and we now get to start weaning her off the harness! Praise the Lord!

So, over the next 3 weeks, she will take off the harness for 4 hours, then 8 hours, and then 12 hours a day until she is finally out for good. We are so happy that the Lord has answered our prayers for the continued development of her pelvis that will avoid future problems. THANK YOU!

And thanks to the family and friends who have sent up prayers and thoughts for her as well.

See you all later!

July Update

Hello Everyone! Thanks for stopping in for another exciting installment of the Julius Patton Clan! :)

We spent a relaxing and enjoyable two weeks with Julius' family in Tulsa and only came home for Evelyn's doctors appointments. I mean, who can resist all the good food Janet makes, a soft bed, and great company with family and friends when there is no work to return to in Texas? Not us! Thanks Tulsa Peeps for a great vacation!

When we did finally return, it was for Evelyn to recieve her 2 month physical and shots, and to evaluate her need to be in the harness. I will go into that in another post because I want to start separating my topics. (Mostly because it will help me when I go to put time in on her baby scrapbook...just copy and paste, add embellishments, and print!)

Now that we are back home, it is concerns with finances again that take over. We must hit the pavement and get paper applications from businesses not online. I must study for the psychology test that is required for my LPA, which I can take as soon as I receive the letter of approval regarding my application. I expect to get it any day now.

Plus, we are still dealing with the fleas that somehow gained access to our indoor-only cats. Poor Kramer has experienced an allergic reaction to their bites and requires anti-biotics to care for him. We were given further instructions on what we can do to address the fleas, so we are going to be doing that now too.

Okay, that is all for this post! Come back for more!

The First Month with Evelyn

It has been nearly five weeks, and things are starting to feel a little permanent. For a while it felt like we were baby-sitting someone else's baby. :) We are so happy to have our own family unit, and we continue to Praise the Lord every day for blessing us as He has.

Evelyn has been a very contented baby who wants to sleep, eat, and sit in a clean diaper. Only recently has she begun to "wake up". The past few days have been difficult because during the day, she just does not want to take a nap! I thought this would not show up for a couple of years yet. Needless to say, I was frustrated! First, I go from thinking she is nursing at all hours of the day (with the exception of nighttime, thankfully) to feeling as though I have to hold her for hours just to get her to sleep! I am glad that I am not going back to work after only 6 weeks!

Speaking of work, Julius is still applying to jobs but receiving no phone calls. Please pray for this; he is going nuts! I am finally able to send my application for my LPA because my future employer sent me money to assist with the associated costs. This has greatly relieved our minds in that it shows she is still committed to putting me to work when the time is right. So much time has past since we first talked that I started having doubts. But since she is willing to send me money to help me work for her, doubts are gone!

Back to Evelyn. She is so wonderful. How we got so lucky with a perfectly matched spouse, and then a beautiful and happy daughter, we are continually amazed. She has certainly learned how to use her lungs when she needs to as well. But her choice to cry is always related to something wrong, which is not often...I still need an interpreter. I went from thinking she was always hungry to now thinking she is tired. Of course diapers are changed too, but that is an easy one to determine.

Over the past several weeks, she has been sitting in a harness that holds her hips in the proper place. The orthopedist has indicated that this appears to be working at correcting the problem, and we will have her ultrasound done tomorrow to see if her development has improved. If it has, then we will wean her off the harness (though we are not yet sure what weaning is necessary).

Thank you for your prayers. See you later!

Part 2 of 2...

This is Part 2 of the "8 lb. Update," so if you have not yet read it, scroll down and read it first. :)

Julius brought you through the recovery time at the hospital and explained his experience so well. I will try to tell you a bit of the rest.

They took me out of the recovery area around midnight, blood pressure under control and no more shivering from the epidural (yeah!). The epidural machine they use these days are great! The patient is able to press a button to administer medication, no more than once an hour, to control the pain as she feels it. I certainly tried to stay ahead of it! Through the night, we tried to sleep. Julius had a couch-like surface to use and at least it was nearly 6 feet long so his feet weren't dangling! He can sleep anywhere, luckily. I do not remember much about my first night, though. They brought Evelyn into the room after her observation period ended to "room-in."

Over the next few days, we learned how to breast-feed, and Julius got the best baby education he could - changing all diapers, the first sponge bath on his own, waking the baby every few hours to try eating, and swaddling. He took to these tasks like a duck to water, even though he did not have any experience. All he had was me in the bed giving tips and the nurses passing along a little info here and there. He stayed there 24/7 and would not be talked into going home for a good night sleep. Praise God for a loving new Daddy! While I had a difficult time waking him the first couple nights to help out, he soon learned to wake from sleep quickly when his baby girl let out a wail. :)

My local family also came to visit. We all had a nice time celebrating and enjoying the new beauty the Lord blessed our family with. They even brought a Mother's Day Feast to the hospital on Sunday to celebrate with my mom, my sister Jennifer, and now me as the mothers present. Dad's delicious BBQ chicken certainly made the nurses drool!

I felt better each day, but then they removed the epidural and placed me on pill medication. I had a really bad third night. About 11 pm, I was trying to drift into a nap, completely uncomfortable after spending days on my back (too difficult to be on my side with the incision). I had HGTV on very low, but they made a joke that made me laugh. It hurt sooo bad. Later, my doctor said that my pain was not managed well because I should have been able to laugh. Poor Julius...he was so startled by my outcry of pain and he must have been stunned to look at me. I was crying with pain, a grimace on my face, but still smiling and laughing because the joke kept me going. I must have had a scary, maniacal look with this combination. It took time to calm down, but I was now back to feeling as though it were the first night again. I could barely walk, certainly not without Julius to hold me every step of the way. It was painful and the nurses were unable to give me any sort of rescue medication because I was already taking my prescribed meds. It was a long night, but we made it through and were able to recover some ground before being discharged late the next day.

Since coming home, we have settled into a learning routine. Once I figure something out, which takes a couple days to do, Evelyn changes things up a little. She is wonderful! Wakeful times are slowly increasing and she has a very content temperament. I have recently been reassured by my parents and doctor's nurse that her schedule of going about 4 hours between feedings are just fine, since she is nursing well when she is there. The nurse told me to just enjoy it...I guess I got lucky that I am able to get more than a couple hours to sleep at night between feedings! But then, she is likely to change things on me now that I have said it...

Thank you all for your prayers. We are so happy with this new addition and we will be trying to put up little stories of our experience with our first daughter here on the blog. So check back every once in a while. :) Love to you all.

8lb Update!

Evelyn Lucile Patton was born via C-section on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 7:49pm, weighing 8lbs 7oz and 20” in length. Because of the surgical procedure, Kimberly and baby were kept at Women’s Hospital of Texas until the following Monday afternoon. The entire family is doing well.

That’s the basic update. If you want more info on the whats, whys and wherefores, then here is what Paul Harvey might call, “… the rest of the story.”

Part 1 of 2…

Even though we still had a scheduled C-section set for Monday, May 10, we also still had a previously scheduled doctor’s appointment on the previous Friday, May 7 at 2:50pm. Prior to leaving for the appointment, we thought to bring the hospital bags, but instead chose not to. The reason for this was simple reverse psychology… sort of. Kimberly had previously stated her concern that she didn’t want to share our anniversary date, May 10, with the birth of our first baby. We figured that if we brought the bag, then we wouldn’t need it, but if we didn’t bring the bag, then we might need it.

So, in we go to the doctor’s office and while the nurse is doing their standard checks (heart rate, blood pressure, urine test, etc.), they note that Kimberly’s blood pressure is slightly elevated – though not dangerous. About 10 minutes later, the nurse checks her BP again and it was still elevated. A few minutes later, the doctor comes in and begins her standard check of things, during which Kimberly tells her about some awkward headaches that she has been getting off and on for a few days. When the doctor checks her BP again, it was still elevated. Although the description of headaches did not seem to be indicative of those found with preeclampsia, the doctor wanted to put Kimberly under observation for a couple hours so they could monitor her BP before making a decision about what to do.

We meandered over to the Hospital to the Labor & Delivery Testing area and checked in. Kimberly was put into a room where they hooked up a couple monitors that track the baby’s heart rate and a BP monitor for Kimberly. Over the next couple of hours, Kimberly’s blood pressure continued to steadily climb. After discussing options with the doctor, we all thought that it would be better to do the C-section that evening, rather than waiting until Monday and chancing any possible complications from her rising blood pressure.

While they guided Kimberly to prep for the surgery, I made the informative phone calls to family and then headed up to the C-Section Father’s Waiting room. After donning the scrubs and pacing around a 10’x10’ room for what seemed like hours, a nurse came in and led me to the operating room. I walk into a large square sterile-white room where 2 doctors are leaning over Kimberly’s abdomen – covered from our view by a sheet, along with an anesthesiologist near Kimberly’s head and two nurses standing ‘at the ready.’

I sat down next to Kimberly and did my best to calm and encourage her. They already had her on local anesthesia, so she was awake and aware while they were performing the surgical procedure. She was feeling some of the side effects of the medicine and kept shivering off and on. After only a few short minutes, the anesthetist asked me if I was ready to be a Daddy, to which I could only respond with a look that was somewhat similar to a ‘deer in the headlights’ look. He smiled and told me to grab my camera because, “… in about 30 seconds you’re gonna be a Daddy.”

Sure enough, about 30 seconds later, we heard the first cry of our baby. They lowered the shade enough so I could get a quick picture right before they cut the umbilical cord. The doctor made the comment, “No wonder you couldn’t get her to turn in the womb… there was no room!” Kimberly and I shared a smile as they brought me over to the ‘warming table’ where one of the nurses started doing all the cleaning, foot-printing, etc. I couldn’t keep from taking a lot of photos, grinning ear to ear, and praising God.

It’s one thing to hear stories from other people about the birth of their children, or to look at Kimberly 8-9 months pregnant knowing our child is growing inside her, or to look on the screen at a sonogram and actually seeing a computerized, graphical representation of what our child looks like. However, it is nothing compared to actually seeing your own child with your own eyes while she is crying about being pried from the womb and you are crying with joy and praise.

When the nurse finished with all her paperwork and stuff, she had me stretch out my shirt and lean over while she inked Evelyn’s feet and placed both footprints right on my stomach. It was great. She then handed Evelyn to me – anxious, nervous and scared I might hurt her, I brought her over so that Kimberly could see and hold her. After holding her for only a few minutes, the nurses came back to take me and Evelyn to the transition nursery while the doctors finished their work on Kimberly.

So… giddy as a schoolgirl, grinning like a kid in a candy shop, and proud as a soldier protecting his country, I escorted Evelyn upstairs to the nursery – stopping at the family waiting room to notify the family.

After awhile, I went to the C-Section Recovery room where Kimberly was being kept. Her blood pressure was still a bit elevated and going up a little. They decided to use Magnesium Sulfate to help regulate her blood pressure and after a couple of hours, her BP began to lower. The nurse suggested we stay in the recovery room a little while longer because the AC unit in the other wing had gone out and they were trying to repair it. After about another hour, we were able to move into a room where we would stay for the duration.

to be continued...

We Have A Date

While at the regular Doctor's visit on Apr 29, we were chatting with the doctor about different things. At the end of every visit, she always takes a few moments to ask us if we have any questions, concerns or anything. We had some questions regarding the position of the baby: How does she know when to turn? When does she turn? etc.

The doctor paused a moment and asked if they had confirmed that the baby had actually turned yet. We said 'No' and when she double-checked the file, she saw that it had not yet been confirmed. So she set us up for a quick ultrasound a few minutes later and saw that Evelyn had not turned into the proper position for vaginal birth.

We were at 37.5 weeks pregnant and the baby should be turned by then. The doctor sadly informed us that Evelyn is in 'Breech' - basically means that the baby is not sitting head-down in preparation for a vaginal birth. Either they are sitting head-up butt-down or with a leg sticking down or something similar.

She set us up for an appointment the next day at the hospital to attempt an External Cephalic Version, or External Version. This is where they externally monitor the baby (heartrate & position) while pushing and turning the baby by pressing on the belly. It is an uncomfortable and sometimes painful process that attempts to position the baby correctly for vaginal birth. They have to do this process at the hospital just in case something happens and they have to do an emergency C-section.

Later that night, Kimberly and I were talking about it and we both believed that God was in control. If God plans for Evelyn to turn and enter this world in a vaginal birth, it would happen and we would praise Him. If He plans for her to enter this world via a C-section, it would happen and we would praise Him. We are often remind of Jeremiah 29:11 and it is very comforting.

The next day, after multiple attempts, the doctor was not able to turn Evelyn. As she was apologizing for the lack of success, Kimberly told her, "It's okay. God is in control."

So they scheduled us for a planned C-section for 10am on Monday, May 10, 2010 (aka. Our Anniversay), when we get to meet our first bundle of joy. Kimberly will be at 39 weeks tomorrow (May 8), so Evelyn will be born at almost full term. In the meantime, we have both been counting down the days, praising God and trying to not get too overly anxious!

Please keep praying for us and the hospital staff for a successful and healthy birth.

So, we have reached 37 weeks! This means if Evie is born now, she will not be considered premature or pre-term! God is good! But we still want her to take the time He intended to be ready to face this harsh world.

I asked the doctor how far past due date she lets the pregnancy go before inducing, to which she responded 7 days. So, sometime between now and May 23 we are Bringing Home Baby!!! How exciting!

We will try to post again soon, so check back. If something interesting comes up, we want to share. And when Evelyn is born, we will try to share the info and some pics as soon as we can.

Love you all!

Daddy's finally got "the bug"

Last night, Julius went out to the store to buy his medical supplies. He showed up a little too late and the pharmacy was closed, so he decided to walk around. The pharmacy in this store just happens to be next to the baby center.

He sends me a text asking if she needs anymore onesies with a "hehe" attached. This last reference is because he has seen the ones that have been given to us and my own tendency to buy one or two outfits for future use whenever I go to the store. If we were together, he would just smile and imply an eye-roll when I wandered off to get something unrelated and came back to the cart with baby clothes. :)

So, not wanting to miss an opportunity, I texted him back that onesies are always useful, especially when chosen by Daddy. Well...He came back with several new little girl outfits in various sizes and had fun doing it too! He was so cute when he was showing off his purchases to Jennifer and I.

He has finally been bitten and is so anxious to have her here. While he has always shown a desire to hold her as soon as he could, I think he can finally start to visualize her in our lives. I love to watch his development into this new phase of our family. I hope the pics at the hospital will show his wonder, too!

The Lord is Faithful

I just wanted to hop on (yes, so soon after my last) and share some good news. A few days ago, while Jennifer was chatting with a coworker, she found a connection to my previous work. The aunt of this coworker is a psychologist in Houston who carries contracts with a couple of county's CPS for testings. When Jen heard this, she asked her to forward my resume, with the explanation that I am pregnant and may be available only for part-time work.

The psychologist, Dr. Walker, was so excited to receive my resume because she is in the market for a psychometrist due to all the work they are receiving, and having to turn away. They are consistently scheduled a month out, and if she can hire more individuals, then they can get more referrals in within a week, and therefore make more income. God is good!

Now, of course the timing is what is most important. If her practice were set up differently, then she would put me to work this Monday. However, as it is, she essentially takes individuals on as contractors, not employees. So, I must first become an LPA (Licensed Psychological Associate) and become an approved Medicaid provider before I can do any work for her. This process can take from 4 - 8 weeks to complete, but since she is going to help me pay the costs related to this license, I know that this job is essentially assured. Again, timing is still a concern. Once I am testing, she must bill Medicaid and receive payment before paying me. So, it may be another 6 weeks before I receive my first paycheck! The reason this is completely worth the wait is this...She pays double what I was making at my last job! Now I know that I can easily start working part-time, while focusing on being a new mom, and bring home the same I was making in Oklahoma. Wow!

While the Lord is letting this work out so that my pregnancy can finish and I can recover, it is still very important for Julius to continue his search for employment to find the means to pay bills in the meantime. Our May bills at this time are completely in God's hands.

Thank you for your prayers, and please send up some praise for this opportunity. It means that there is an end in sight, if we can only keep the faith and don't give up!

March Update...on April 1st :)

Things have been busy this past week. We have been making day trips to San Antonio to get our possessions out of storage. Since we have settled with my sister in Houston, we are prepared to stay for a lengthy period, and we cannot afford to store our things any longer. There is a neighborhood garage sale in a couple of weeks that we pray will be successful in decreasing what we own and providing some money for bills.

Overall, things are....moving, I guess. We are so blessed to have a place to live, with someone who wants to help house us and take care of us in our time of greatest need. My parents have been employing Julius to fix their homes so that they can sell one and retire at the other. It has been such a God-send these past months!! But that is done now, and we are still trying to get the word out that his business is for hire. We would appreciate it if you would include us in your prayers for that goal.

As many of you know, we are seriously looking into the option of filing for bankruptcy, too. Since we discovered that our income level qualifies us to apply for Legal Aid, we are in the application process now to seek that legal advice. I had been hoping that since my student loans were consolidated by a private company that they might slip through to discharge, but I have been assured that is not at all the case. So, if we file, we will still have to address both student loans and, likely, Julius' truck loan because he needs it to work. When we are both able to work, this may not be the problem it presents to us right now, but we shall see what the Lord has planned. If we are advised that a bankruptcy will not benefit us because of these conditions, then we may have to let them all go and work on building new credit histories while fending off collections. However, I believe that even doing that has provided us some very beneficial worry-relief as we have too often felt like we were drowning over the past year trying to make good on our financial obligations. It will soon have a resolution that will allow us to focus on the most important, magnificent, and awe-inspiring event that will ever occur in our earthly lives....

Evelyn's nearly arrived! :) We are 33 weeks already!

I will be taking some maternity pictures this weekend, and if there are any good ones, I will share them on FB. We have had both baby showers now, so I am taking stock of all that I still need before she arrives. I am having to make decisions between what is nice to have, what I want to have, and what is necessary to have. These are tough decisions because I have loved every thoughtful gift we have received, but I am making them for my growing family, so it is a loving burden. My mom is helping me invest in cloth diapers too...there are so many cool patterns that are easy to make so the upfront costs are not as bad as what retail is asking for! Did you know that if you make your own baby wipes with paper towels (or cloth) and a few ingredients like baby oil and shampoo, that you can save from $3,000 to $5,000 a year?!? Whoa! I am all over that!

Well, thanks for checking in and seeing how we are doing. While there are many negative aspects going on around us at the moment, please know that we are filled with God's love and we have faith in His purpose for us. We are very happy with what is most important...each other, our daughter, and our loving friends and family. Thank you for your prayers, your advice and input, and for caring about us.
Love you all!

Evie's First Picture!

WOW!

Can you say "Astounding technology"? Ultrasounds can show so much!

Yesterday, we experienced the last ultrasound of our pregnancy. The technicians were taking all kinds of measurements to determine that all looks normal and healthy. Evelyn is approximately 3 lbs. now, which is right where she should be at 29 weeks. But here are the cool details.

Julius and I saw her face...and even saw her mouth open, close, and do the sucking motion! Too cool! We saw the chambers of her heart working, and even saw the blue and red colors that show the flow of blood into and from her heart and umbilical cord. While they gave us several pictures, most consisted of her face. There are a couple of her feet, too. I have put the best four here to share with you all.

We are now going to every two weeks for our doctor's appointments. She indicated these appointments are now just to monitor my growth, since all the blood tests have been performed and come back healthy, we no longer need to do them. Prayers are appreciated...we are sooooo excited!

Love you all!

February

Hi everyone!

I am going to try and make a post a minimum of once per month to keep this thing going. Julius started it when we first heard we were pregnant last year, but it has not been maintained as we had hoped. I guess when things are hard who wants to write about them, right?

Well, things are looking up again and we are excited about what has been going on in our lives lately. God has truly gotten our attention these past few months. Our possessions have been put into storage; our housing has decreased from a two-bedroom apartment to RV to guest bedroom in my sister's home in Houston; and we have both become unemployed. How many more worldly distractions do we need to remove to notice God is calling us back to Him? NONE!

Recently, Julius and I were reminded about how we need to be praying. Rather than saying "Lord, a job...any job will do," we must be specific in our prayers. If we do not know what to pray for, we must step back and ask for His wisdom in knowing the desires of our hearts, as He was the one who placed them there. BIG REVELATION! We have taken this to heart and are making steps to fix our faith and spiritual path together.

Recently, we started doing a near-daily devotional with each other and are learning how to talk to God and to know what we need to know to be better Christians. The book we are using to help us along is called One-Year Walk With God. We tried to find something that was for couples, but all that we found were those that focused on fixing a relationship through God's love. While that is very useful for many marriages, Julius and I are not at that point. We are doing this devotional together, talking about what the verses and message mean to us in our life right now, and praying together. This has taught us so much, as the messages are talking directly to our current struggles and teaching us how to pray more specifically.

It was an answer to one of these prayers that we have finally decided to settle in the Houston area for the time being. We are feeling so relieved to know that we have a warm, solid place to live that allows Julius to help around the house as a kind of rent, and to know that we are to look locally for jobs. We have already started Julius' business, Patton-of-All-Trades, and I am going to be working hard for awhile trying to get him established. I do not know what the Lord has in store for me, being so close to my due date, but our faith and endurance is growing. Praise you, Lord.

I will go now, but I will be back. Six months along and anxiously awaiting the arrival of our precious daughter, Evelyn Lucile.

So many changes...

Hello All,

It has been way too long since our last posting. Changes in life are all ups and downs, but still we do not find the energy to place a little post to share with all. A new year's resolution, I suppose.

Julius and I are now 5 months pregnant and counting! Evelyn Lucile Patton will be expected to join our family around May 15, 2010. I truly hope it is before or after the 10th, our anniversary. Perhaps, the 11th will be the day, eh Jeffrey? Our family has a long tradition of sharing birthdays, and if Evelyn shows up on Julius' brother's then we will easily tie the two families together! There...that's a plan!

Julius is right at this moment driving our moving truck to San Antonio to another storage unit, and that begins our next great adventure. We made the tough decision to leave his family and my job in Tulsa to try our futures back in Texas. As most of you know, Julius was unable to so much as even schedule an interview for a job (any job) in this area since July. We were so confident that he could find a short-term retail position somewhere while we figured out what he was to do next, but God seems to have shut that door completely.

When the opportunity to move out of our apartment and into Mom and Dad's RV arose, we felt relief from major stress. After all, we had not been making our bills each month, even with my increased school-year income. We have been so blessed with family support, both financially and with advice, and we praise our Lord for it!

We would like to ask for your prayers at this time, too. Thanks to a message delivered through Uncle Jay, we have learned what we were missing when we spoke with God. Julius has never been able to determine specifically what he wants to do, career-wise; he has only known that he has a passion for helping others and seeing improvement result from his efforts. We are asking that God provides him the answer with what He intends for Julius in His service. Our current plan is for Julius to begin his own handyman/renovation business in the area of San Antonio. He will be his own boss and can work with his hands to create and rejuvenate, until he knows his purpose.

For myself, I have always wanted to be a teacher (of older kids). My Master's degree should help me qualify for junior/community college level teaching, so that is my prayer for a career. And, of course, we are praying for a healthy baby and a solid place to bring her home to when the time comes. Being homeless is tough. :)

Thank you all for reading this. It shows how much you care about learning who we are and what we are going through. See you soon, wherever you are.....
